Avira and the compatibility with Windows 8

Microsoft released Windows 8 on October 26, 2012.

Historically, Microsoft has always had a certification process with different levels for the software running on its operating system. These levels are “Compatible with …” and “Designed for …”. In order to achieve these compatibility levels, there are many changes which need to be implemented by the software. After these changes have been implemented, the software has to be checked by Microsoft in order to confirm the results obtained by the ISV (Independent Software Vendor). All these steps require significant amount of time and effort.

The Windows 8 operating system, and its equivalent in the server area called Windows Server 2012, have a completely new architecture. Their architecture forces the software which runs on them to make significant changes in the frameworks and the APIs (Application Programming Interface) used to write the software. Old frameworks (e.g.: Layered Service Providers, Transport Driver Interface, etc.) will no longer be supported on the long term.

As with any new computer operating system, it is possible that at the beginning some existing software is not compatible with it. Currently, the Avira products are not yet certified for Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 and there were some problems reported by our users who have upgraded to this operating system.

We are working very hard to get our products Windows 8 compatible as soon as possible.

Today, we have rolled out the first patch which brings us closer to the desired compatibility.

After applying this patch, the product version should be 13.0.0.2761 and there should no longer be any stability problems. Please note that a reboot is required after the installation.

Depending on your settings, the product should update automatically and ask you to reboot. If you configured differently, you might be asked in advance if you want to perform the update because of the required reboot.

We will continue to rollout patches in the next few weeks. We hope to be able to remove very soon the popup at the beginning the installation which informs the user that we don’t officially support this operating system.
