Protect yourself and all your devices against aggressive advertisements for FREE

There is a lot of money being spent in the IT industry on analytics and on detailed information on users and their behavior online.

There is nothing wrong in wanting to know who your users are and what they want in order to serve them better and with less hassle for them.

But, the border between privacy violation and data collection is very thin and that’s why there are also violations of privacy. The law makers all over the world are trying all the time to regulate data collection, but there are just too many websites which can’t be controlled. In other words, the users are on their own to protect their privacy online.

This article has two parts: this part is about Advertisements and the second one is about “Protect yourself and all your devices from tracking for FREE”.

Advertisements (ads)

Ads are not bad in general, but too many ads are simply creating a bad experience for the user. This applies to normal websites as well as to Facebook and alike. The biggest problem with the ads is that they never come alone. So, when you see an nerving advertisement, there is much more behind it: javascript code and cookies that remain on your system and follow you everywhere.

There is no setting in any of the major browsers that can allow you to block ads.

The only solution I know of is to install an Add-on.

Use Add-ons for additional control

I know two great add-ons that can block ads effectively. There might be more, but I haven’t tested them.

1. AdBlockPlus (ABP) – www.adblockplus.org

Read here about what the add-on can do. The most notable thing that you must know is that ABP does not block all ads. There is a special category of ads which are considered as Acceptable and using this concept ABP makes money.

2. AdBlock (AB) – getadblock.com

AdBlock does pretty much the same as AB+ but it doesn’t have anything like Acceptable Ads. So, it blocks everything it sees as ad.

I don’t know yet which add-on is better in blocking ads. Googling a bit gives you though some hints.

It is pretty safe to use any of them, don’t forget though that ABP will let some ads through.
